From Samegrelo to European markets

Zaza Gvatua was born and raised in Tbilisi; he got married and settled in Tbilisi, but originally he is from Zugdidi and always thought of the development of his home region. Despite living in Tbilisi he always considered himself Zugdidian and loved his ancestral house the most.

Favorable natural resources in the vicinity of his ancestral lands contributed to his desire to build a greenhouse in Zugdidi. Natural hot water flowing in 150 meters made his idea to launch the construction of the greenhouse more attractive, but it turned out impossible to do the mentioned only at his own expense; in 2014 he learned about the concessional loans from a bank and immediately decided to carry out his conceived project; he built a new greenhouse, which, as he himself points out, changed his and his family’s life. He brought his family from Tbilisi and settled in Zugdidi; now he is growing up his children in Zugdidi and trying to improve the daily life of the locals.

He also says that the work is seasonal in a greenhouse, accordingly the number of employees is constantly changing. 5 people work on a daily basis, while their number increases up to 15 people in a season.

It is already the second season of the harvest: he supplies the local market with ecologically clean cucumbers and tomatoes. He is glad he produces natural product in Georgia and serves to Georgian business.

He emphasizes that he would not be able to commence and develop his business without the support of the state; 120 000 USD of investment is carried out in his business, from which the volume of the concessional agro credit amounts to 60 000 US dollars. In future he plans to expand the greenhouse in order to employ more people and serve export markets. Therefore, he admits he does not exclude to enjoy the benefit from the projects proposed by the government in the future.
