Native of Imereti Restoring the Tradition of Oak Barrel Production in Gurjaani

Vasiko Kalandadze, father of 2 children, lawyer by profession, is a man who, with  the help of Preferential Agro Credit revived a forgotten handicraft industry and   opened oak barrel manufacturing enterprise.

A long time ago, he learned about abandoned Mechanical Plant in Gurjaani, which manufactured oak barrels in Soviet times, and he had planned to restore and upgrade the old enterprise. In 2013, he learned about Preferential Agro Credit from TV advertising, gathered supporters, and launched a business which, as he notes, made his life more interesting. According to him, oak barrel manufacturing is a creative process that brings profit and at the same time, one is happy to go to work.

They would not be able to manufacture new barrels without Preferential Agro Credit (the base on which a new enterprise was built had even no walls). Initially, they only intended to recover the barrels, but the credit financing enabled them to manufacture new barrels. He notes that this year they exported Georgian oak barrels to Germany for the first time and they are planning to engage in export in the future as well.

The enterprise work is seasonal, because wine requires aging in a barrel only when it is matured and balanced. That's when the sales start to increase for "Professional Winery Products".He says proudly that 15 people are employed there and notes that before manufacturing was launched, he specially went to Spain in order to bring a professional of this branch, who would teach the locals this handicraft. He brought an experienced manufacturer of oak barrels from Spain, gathered 18-20 year-old young men and taught this handicraft.

As he says, involvement of young people is necessary for the development of this branch and at the same time, young people should be given a chance of self-realization.Total investment of USD 630,000 was made in the enterprise, wherefrom USD 550,000 is a preferential agro credit. In the future, he is going remodel barrels that will no longer be usable for storing wines, into decorative furniture of different design.
