Cultivar testing in Akhalkalaki runs successfully
Giorgi Chkheidze and Iuri Nozadze, Deputy Ministers of Agriculture of Georgia, together with Giorgi Mikeladze, Deputy Governor of Samtskhe-Javakheti, and heads of various departments within the Ministry of Agriculture, visited the Cultivar Testing Station in Akhalkalaki municipality arranged with modern standards. The Station is one of the 10 centers that are owned by Grain Logistics Company LLC throughout Georgia. The demonstration land plot of cultivar testing in Akhalkalaki is located on 144 ha of land, where testing of different cultivars and multiplication/production of seeds is carried out annually. As for wheat and barley demonstration land plots, the three-year testing of cultivars has been successfully completed. With these cultivars, at least 5 tons of barley and 4 tons of wheat can be grown on 1 hectare, on average, throughout Georgia. Grain Logistics Company started testing of cultivars on the demonstration land plots four years ago and, as of today, seed materials have been provided for 3000 hectares throughout Georgia. It is noteworthy that the demonstration land plot was supplied with water by Georgian Melioration Ltd only after the large-scale rehabilitation works were carried out in Akhalkalaki region. Within the framework of rehabilitation works, the Almolo pumping station was fully restored, as a result of which water can be supplied to 1 400 hectares of agricultural land. It is important to note that from 2018 wheat certification will be mandatory. The aim of introducing quality control system on seed and plant materials is to preserve cultivar and genetic purity, providing genetically pure seed material for farmers and guaranteeing high quality harvest. At the same time, the introduction of a certified system will protect the market from counterfeit products.
