The Rural Development Agency will offer a new extension package to farmers in pilot, Kakheti and Shida Kartli

Rural Development Agency, with support of United Nations Development Program (UNDP),  will offer a new, modern extension package to farmers, that implies supply of the recommendations that are developed with consideration of climatic conditions. 

To the event held with regard to beginning of the project were attended the Director of the Rural Development Agency – Davit Tsitladze and the National Coordinator of the Early Warning System Project of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) – Ketevan Skhireli. 

Through the new program, for piloting, yet only in 2 regions, for manufacturers of the major agricultural crops will be available a modern extension package, that means recommendations developed with considering  the weather for the prevention of diseases and ensuring a quality harvest. 

For improvement of  the equipment and capabilities of the agro-meteorological observation network, will be introduced the GECSA system, which is a web-based digital platform for agro-meteorological services. 

In the targeted regions of the project, in Kakheti and Shida Kartli, in the unified system will be involved 15 new and   19 rehabilitated weather stations. Recommendations prepared by the specialists in this field about the agricultural operations to be carried out will be sent from the target regions, Kakheti and Shida Kartli, to the manufacturers of selected crops, namely apples, grapes, peaches, nectarines, wheat and corn, within the program, in order to ensure quantitative and qualitative growth of agricultural products. 

The GECSA system will be operated by the Rural Development Agency in coordination with the National Environment Agency and the Scientific Research Center. 

New extension package was developed with support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), within the framework of the project "Expansion of the Multilateral Threat Early Warning System and Use of Climate Information in Georgia". This project is implemented with the support of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the governments of Georgia, Sweden and Switzerland.
