Beneficiaries of the state program of agro-insurance will be compensated for the damage caused by hail
Beneficiaries involved in the state agro-insurance program in Shida Kartli region will be compensated for the damage caused by hail. The volume of damage caused is calculated by the insurance companies.
Ms. Natalia Kharatishvili, Head of the Operations Department of the Agricultural and Rural Development Agency, Mr. Nugzar Samkharadze, Deputy Governor of the Shida Kartli Region and the representatives of the insurance company Aldagi met with the farmers affected by the hail in Gori Municipality and inspected the damaged lands.
"We call on farmers to insure their crops. The state is constantly improving agro-insurance conditions. Under the anti-crisis plan, agro-insurance has become three-year for perennial crops. The state finances 70% of the insurance policy for all crops and 50% - for vines - Ms. Natalia Kharatishvili declared.
According to Mr. Nugzar Samkharadze, it is important for farmers to use state support, insure their crops and be protected.
Farmer Tamar Michitashvili, a farmer in the village of Meghvrekisi in Gori municipality, was hit by a hailstorm, destroying 75% of her crop in the apple orchard. Insurance company Aldagi will reimburse the beneficiary about 80,000 GEL. The farmer received 70% co-financing from the state to purchase the insurance policy; the amount paid by her for the insurance of the 5 ha area was 3,000 GEL, while the amount of the state subsidy was 7,000 GEL.
An individual or legal entity that owns, uses or actually owns not more than 5 ha (in the case of wheat crop insurance, not more than 30 ha) of agricultural land may participate in the state agro-insurance program. Also, in the case of agricultural cooperatives, the area limit does not apply and the maximum amount of the insurance premium is 50,000 GEL.
As of May, 2020, 10,899 policies have been issued under the Agro-Insurance Program. 5,568 beneficiaries are involved in the program. The land area of more than 10,000 hectares is insured, and the value of the insured crop exceeds 107 million GEL.
